Solid State DC Transformers, Intelligent Substation Technology for Multi-Terminal HVDC

Abstract:

High-power medium-voltage, bi-directional DC-to-DC converters, so-called Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters, can be built using commercially available components. The advantages of three-phase DAB converters are highlighted. Fault ride through capability can electronically protect DC distribution grids.  Combining MMC with the DAB DC converter concept leads to compact substations that can create a link between HVDC and MVDC grids.
