Circuit Breakers for MVDC – Requirements and Alternatives

Abstract:

Circuit breakers capable of interrupting dc are key components for realizing MVDC grids. Such breakers are fundamentally different to their ac counterparts, and are subject to quite different requirements. A presentation of these requirements is followed by an overview of different dc circuit breaker topologies, experiences from testing of a 27kV VSC-assisted resonant current breaker prototype and an outlook for the future.
