A Generic Cell Design for Modular Multilevel Converters

Abstract:

As the adaptation of renewable energy sources has caused the power from offshore wind power and solar power plants to be transmitted over long distances. High Voltage DC (HVDC) or Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) transmission systems are being more favored over High Voltage AC (HVAC) transmission as they are more efficient as well as cost effective considering long distance transmission. Today the innovation in power electronics converter technologies have made Voltage Source Converters (VSC) to be an ideal fit for transmitting the power in HVDC transmission. Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has an upper hand over the traditional two level or three level VSC in terms of losses, efficiency, reliability, harmonics and footprints. In this presentation, we will talk about different MMC topologies for various applications and we will show our approach, as Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR), how to create a flexible cell design to cover different MMC based applications.
